Be honest, but not harsh: The worst thing to tell someone is that he/she reminds you of your brother or sister. That may be what you’re thinking but don’t be that harsh. Let them know that you enjoy spending time with them and would like to continue your relationship on a friend level. If they ask why, tell them that you’re not interested in dating anyone right now or that you’re trying to work on yourself after your last break up. If neither one of these fits the bill for your situation and you really just want to be rid of the person, be straightforward: “Sorry I’m not interested.” You’re being honest and maybe a bit blunt, but wouldn’t you rather have someone be direct with you instead of give you a BS answer? 2. Take a step back: If being forward isn’t your thing then subtly let the relationship fizzle out on its own. Don’t avoid the other person, but start tapering off the text messages and calls. If he/she wants to hang out and continues to try to communicate with you, you need to make yourself clear. Say that you’re busy but that you might be able to fit in time for a strictly friendly outing. This should be an outing involving other friends or something that is not too much like a date. 3. Don’t lead them on: The worst thing you can do at this point is lead the person on. You may not mean to but obviously, you already have a romantic admirer. Your body language or something else you’re doing might communicating mutual interest. If you’d like to try to continue a relationship as just friends, make sure you keep it as just that: friends. I’m not saying the dynamic between you two should be awkward now, just make sure you think before you say anything that could be a little ambiguous. These are just a couple of tips to make it a little easier on you and the person you’re friend-zoning. Just remember to stay respectful and keep your heart and mind open! You never know if down the road the friendship could become something much more.
