Health professions advisors are a key resource for undergraduate students interested in becoming doctors, dentists, veterinarians, nurses, physical therapists or other allied health professionals. They help students research their options, choose the appropriate majors, complete required pre-requisite courses, engage in relevant volunteer and internship experiences, prepare for standardized tests, write letters of recommendation and navigate the application process to health profession programs.

Hering advises students of all majors who want to enter a health profession. However, she says it’s important for students to get the advice they need from their college’s designated health professions advisor.

At Iona, advising in the health professions is centralized within the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and is led by Dr. Yourha Kang. She helps students who are majoring in any discipline explore career possibilities, prepare for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), find shadowing and volunteer opportunities, and build research and community service into their schedules. She also assists in preparing students for interviews, writing letters of recommendation and helping with secondary applications.

Many health professions programs stipulate certain undergraduate course requirements, and some programs may require or recommend additional prerequisites like chemistry, microbiology, physics, statistics, psychology, sociology or behavioral sciences, a year of foreign language and/or anatomy and physiology. It is recommended that you talk to your health professions advisor early and often to ensure you are on track with your coursework and MCAT preparation.

When preparing for a future in the health professions, it is important to maintain high GPAs both overall and in science. The more competitive your cumulative and science GPAs are, the better your chances of being accepted to a graduate health profession program.

As you apply to medical, dental, pharmacy or other allied health profession schools, you will need excellent letters of recommendation. While some programs will accept letters from a single individual, most will require a committee letter which is written by a group of faculty members. Ideally, the chair of your committee will be your health professions advisor, but you should check with your desired program to make sure.
