The history behind the card

Renault's hands free card is an international hit. It's become an integral element in the lives of car owners. It was first designed twenty years ago and is now among the leading innovations in the company. Pascaline, the Head of Cross-Cutting Products in the Products division takes you on an adventure of discovery to find out the background of this useful tool.

In 2001 the Laguna II, an executive saloon which embodies 'lifestyle-driven driving", was launched into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation and an array of new features features which helped customers enjoy their vehicles to the fullest.

However, the owners of these cars still had to use keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers believed that this was a major problem for many people.

They decided to put a contactless card in their vehicles, and develop an application that would allow drivers to enter and unlock their cars by simply shaking their hands. The result is the card key which is now present on the majority of Renault vehicles. The car will open automatically when the card is near the ignition barrel, or on the center console. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). It is supplied individually clam packed and ready to be programmed using Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The design

A Renault key card, or even a remote car key, is a wonderful convenience to have in our daily lives. Unfortunately, these devices are susceptible to malfunction due to wear and tear or being dropped. When this occurs, it is extremely frustrating. Thankfully, there are several ways to replace your Renault key card. One option is to call your dealer. It could take a while and can be costly. A professional locksmith is another option.

This product is compatible with the Renault Laguna II, Espace 4 and Vel Satis keycards (keyless entry system). It protects your keycard whilst creating a beautiful design. It comes in two colors and can be customized with your VIN, logo, or other details. It can be tucked away in an accessory case for keys or with an ordinary keychain. This is an authentic Renault part that is only compatible with the vehicle for the purpose for which it was ordered. Please provide your VIN to ensure that the correct key has been sent.

The technology

Renault key cards are equipped with transponder chips inside. They also have the ability to communicate at low frequency that allows the card to communicate with your vehicle. These chips can break due to normal use, and it's very expensive to repair or replace them at the dealer. We can repair or replace your Renault key card for less than the dealer cost.

The hands-free card was first introduced in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to represent the "lifestyle" car of 21st century. Renault could not test every possible application despite having a detailed design guideline that was based on over 6,000 interviews with customers.

Luckily, the lead product developer on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel, was staying in an hotel at the time. He was using his room key to open his car. He believed that the car key could be created with the same magnetic strip as the key.

In the years following, the card was praised as a revolutionary innovation and is now available in two out of three Renault vehicles. Although smartphones appear to be nearing the point of replacing it, Renault has chosen to harness these new capabilities without leaving the hands-free cards out of use.

The keyless entry system

The hands free card of Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it was launched 20 years ago. Its design is identical, but the technology inside has seen some upgrades to make it more user-friendly and harder to hack.

It's not able to be used from outside to unlock doors or start the car unless the driver is able to activate it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are designed to determine whether the key is inside or outside. https://www.autokeys-r-us.co.uk/renault/ can still turn on the ignition from a distance but will not open the doors. This is for your security.

The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use a rolling code. This reduces the risk of someone stealing the control message and transmitting it again to gain access, but does not remove it. [1]
