The origins of the card

A crucial part of the life of a car owner, Renault's hands-free card has been a huge hit worldwide. It was designed over in the year 2000 and is now one of the leading innovations in the company. In 2001 the Laguna II, an executive saloon which embodies 'lifestyle-driven driving', went into production. It was a time of great innovation, with an array of new technology attributes that enabled customers reap the full benefits of their car.

The occupants were still required to use keys to open and shut their doors. This was a real stumbling block for many people and Renault engineers determined to tackle the issue.

They decided to incorporate an electronic contactless card into their vehicles, and then develop a system which would allow drivers to unlock and begin their vehicles by simply using their hands. The card key is now present in two of three Renault vehicles. If it's located in the ignition barrel, or the centre console the car will open when the card approaches and secure itself automatically when removed. This is a genuine Renault remote control card (without blade). It is clam-packed in a sealed package and is ready to be programmed with Abrites Diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia Software with the ProTAG Programmer.

The technology

These chips can crack from regular use, and are very expensive to repair or replace them at the dealer. We can repair or replace your Renault key card for less than the dealer cost.

The first hands-free cards were introduced in 2001, in the Laguna II saloon. This car was designed to be the lifestyle car of the 21st Century. Renault could not test all possible uses, despite the detailed design guidelines that was based on over 6,000 interviews with customers.

Fortunately, the product manager on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in an hotel at the time and was using his room key to unlock his car. He thought that a car key could be created using the same magnetic strip that was used to make the key.

In the following years the card was described as an innovation that was revolutionary and is now present on two out of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones seem to be on the verge of replacing it, Renault has chosen to make use of these new features without having the hands-free card go by the wayside.

The keyless entry system

The hands-free card of Renault was a pioneering piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. The exterior is identical but the technology has been upgraded to make it more user-friendly and harder to hack.

It's not able to be used from outside to open doors or start the car unless the driver has activated it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are configured to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key will work from a distance to turn on the ignition of your car, but it won't be able to unlock the doors, and that's for your security.

The wireless remote control transmissions of the system employ the rolling-code. This reduces the risk of someone stealing an informational message and retransmitting it to gain access, but doesn't completely eliminate it. [1]
