Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob

There's nothing more annoying than stepping into your vehicle after a long day and discovering that your key fob battery is dead. Luckily, it's an easy fix with a simple battery replacement from an electronics store or big box retailer.

Adding a spare key fob to your Mazda 3 can be an affordable way to keep yourself from the hassle of being driven to the dealership and having them re-program your keys.

Battery Replacement

Removing the battery from the Mazda 3 key fob is a simple process that you can do at home. However, you should replace the battery when it dies, or if the key fob shows a message on the multi-information display stating, "Low key fob battery. Replace battery."

To open the key fob's case it requires a tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver and some patience. The flathead screwdriver's head into a notch, or gap on the bottom metal of the Mazda 3 key fob to remove the lower part. Repeat the process for the top metal piece Be careful not to damage the rubber ring that is on the bottom of the case.

There is a slot on each side of the case, which houses the battery. Start on one side of the case, and then gently lift it up. Take out the old CR2025 and replace it with a new one, making sure you put it on its face to ensure proper direction of polarity. Finally, place the battery cap back on and reconnect both sides of the key fob case, pressing until you can hear them click.

After replacing the battery Lock and unlock your doors to test whether the fob is working. If everything is in order you're now able to use the Mazda 3's remote functions on the road again!

Pairing Issues

This could indicate that the transmitter in your car may have been damaged. It's usually a task for a professional and you will need a new key fob.

If you have tried replacing the battery and programming the key fob, but it did not resolve the issue it is possible that the chip in the key fob may be malfunctioning. This could be the case if the keyfob was dropped, exposed to saltwater, or was touched by dirty fingers.

To avoid damaging the microchip, it is recommended to use a clean paper towel.

If you aren't sure then you should also examine the battery connector's terminals for cracks or breaks. If this is the case, then carefully connecting them back can generally restore the functionality of the key fob. Additionally, you can look at the buttons to see if they are worn or damaged. If they are loose, they can be resoldered into position, unless they've physically snapped.

Interference Signals

There are few things more frustrating than gazing at the "No Fob Detected" message when trying to start your vehicle. It happens at the worst time, for instance when you're running late to work or pick up your children from daycare or school. There are some things you can do to help figure out what's causing the issue.

Interference signals can interfere with the remote key fob's signal from the vehicle making it unable to work correctly. This could be due to things like weather conditions, buildings, and transmitters operating on the same frequency. Interference could also occur if you have aftermarket equipment installed in your vehicle that transmits at the same frequency as the key fob.

In addition, if your key fob is exposed to salt or the water, it might be damaged. The rubber seals on the electronic chip can be damaged by water, especially when it is submerged over long periods of time such as in a pool or at the beach. This can cause the chip to stop functioning and will require replacement of the key fob. If you have a key that can be programmed to work, you can clean it using electronic cleaners or isopropyl to bring it back to its original function. If this doesn't work then it's likely that the chip is fried and needs to be replaced.

Locking/Unlocking of the Doors

The key fob's buttons send electronic signals to a solenoid inside the car, which converts the signal into a mechanical action that locks and unlocks the doors. If the door lock isn't working, the issue could be a solenoid issue that requires some investigation with the assistance of an expert auto repair shop.

A dead battery of 12 volts can also prevent the fob from functioning correctly. This happens when the battery's charge is lost or the contacts become corroded, and stop transferring electricity. This problem can be fixed within a few minutes using a new battery.

If the key fob isn't working after you have changed the battery or program it again then the problem may be in the receiver module. The device interprets radio frequency signals sent by the key fob to control the vehicle. If it fails it could cost a lot to fix.

To determine if this is the case, start by inserting your spare keys into the key slot and turning the ignition to ON. Press the key fob two times in a period of 10 seconds, without taking it out. The Mazda 3 system will now synchronize the key with the vehicle and you can then use it as your primary remote for driving. This lets you program up three keys.
