A household vacation to a picturesque seaside begins going terribly wrong. https://ctxt.io/2/AABQq67pFg isn't the apparent one. It's because a supernatural drive is inflicting the members of the Capa family to age at an accelerated fee.

That's the intriguing premise of Old, the model new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, which finds the acclaimed director trying to get to grips with probably the most common of anxieties. The ensuing film, like his current effort, Glass, feels both high-concept and self-referential. But it also proves that the grasp of the twist has misplaced a few of his magic contact.

After all, it's been some time for the explanation that auteur made a movie that did not contain a supernatural component in a method or one other. That's a disgrace as a end result of, because the director of such classics as Unbreakable and Split, Shyamalan is greater than able to conjuring up genuine scares in his extra subtle works.

And so it is with his latest effort, which takes its inspiration from the graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. But it is also clear that, in adapting the plot for the large display, Shyamalan felt that this idea wanted one thing extra. And so we get a third act revelation that feels as though it was tacked on for the sake of it.

It's a disgrace as a result of, despite some decent directing and fine performances from its veteran forged, Old would not actually do much with its doubtlessly intriguing central concept. That's very true of the characters, who are engineered by a script that's both over-elaborate and overwritten. The dialogue, for example, sounds stilted and synthetic. The blunt statements of emotional declaration and corny one-liners come across as a kind of alien approximation of human communication.

But if the script's lack of subtlety is the largest drawback with this image, it's also undermined by its lack of focus. By wasting time establishing the family's backstory, teasing out their relationships with each other and their neighbors on the resort, Shyamalan doesn't have sufficient time to discover the deeper questions of this story.

In the end, Old is a mediocre thriller that is too focused on its gimmick to offer something more substantial than a cheesy twist and a few eye-gluing shocks. It's a disgrace because, at this point in his profession, it's clear that Shyamalan should be trying to expand motion pictures.

Fortunately, there's all the time subsequent time. And if the filmmaker can keep away from the temptation to over-reach, he could yet prove that he still has what it takes to ship chills down the spines of moviegoers everywhere. Universal Pictures releases Old in theaters Friday. It's rated PG-13..
