While many films have attempted to merge horror and pornography, "X" is a completely new kind of exploitation film. In a current interview with Variety, director Shane West talked about the film's settings in '70s Texas, how he decided to merge the two genres, and the way he chose the Stevie Nicks song "Landslide" as the film's theme track. X has a great sense of nostalgia for the '70s American cinema scene.

Since the X-rating was launched in 1972, sexploitation filmmakers have been fleecing the label. However, films like Zorro, Deep Throat, and The Devil in Miss Jones tout themselves as the first motion pictures with the Z rating. https://scarlet-camellia-g0gxwb.mystrikingly.com/blog/what-does-pornography-do-to-your-brain-express , for instance, makes use of demure poster art, while The Devil in Miss Jones options the same X logotype as Midnight Cowboy. However, these films acquired combined reviews from critics and the public, so there is no real evidence to help the X label.

While the "X" rating is now associated with pornographic films, the term used to imply one thing else. A film with an X rating did not always imply that it was pornographic, in fact, it could be thought of "silent" if the content weren't graphic. It also made the industry much more viable, and a few X-rated movies even made the Oscars. But the MPAA didn't trademark the term "X", and the label was used to make motion pictures aimed at adults..
