An annual report has found that Thai prisons in 2022 have been nicely under worldwide standards. The no-governmental organisation, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Union for Civil Liberty launched the report yesterday, according to Prachatai English. The report findings show that the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak led to authorities making little progress in implementing lessons realized from the pandemic to improve prison circumstances and the well-being of inmates. While authorities have taken some optimistic steps to address some blatantly abusive conditions, the general picture of prison situations remains bleak. The Thai government must improve its efforts to make jail circumstances according to worldwide requirements and the country’s human rights obligations.” Inadequate and crowded lodging conditions, cruel, inhumane, or degrading remedy and punishment, unsanitary situations, extremely poor high quality of meals and drinking water, insufficient entry to healthcare, exploitative work, limited contacts with the surface world, lack of leisure and rehabilitative activities and ineffective grievance procedures were reported.
