X is the sort of film that horror followers are going to embrace with a ardour. It's clear that director Ti West is a fan of the '70s excess that fuelled classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, however he is sensible sufficient to avoid taking place the nostalgia trap and relying on tired tropes. He's also a master at creating memorable characters, with Mia Goth (playing both the cocky Maxine Minx and the bitter elderly Pearl) specifically making an impression.

Unlike some trendy slashers, which really feel like they're attempting to breed the glory of their betters with remakes and sequels, X feels recent and alive. That's largely because of the truth that it does not take itself too critically. There's a tongue-in-cheek air to the complete thing, from the opening panorama shot that seems to be filmed via barn doorways to the greatest way that the filming of the climactic scene is intercut with outdated footage of the same event.

The cast are all lots of enjoyable, too. Brittany Snow, because the would-be sex star, could be very much in her element here, while Martin Henderson and Jenna Ortega add some comic relief as the porn-curious sound recordist and cowboy-hatted Larry Flynt wannabe. But it's Mia Goth who steals the show, as she demonstrates along with her two performances that she's the subsequent era of Tilda Swinton.

Moreover, the characters in X aren't the same old dumb, helpless twentysomethings that populate most horror films; these are succesful people who walk into situations which are doomed to fail from the beginning. That's a key distinction with this film from its predecessors, which tended to take a Moral Majority method that sees virginal characters survive while promiscuous ones get killed off one by one.

It's when the bodies begin to pile up that X really takes off, with an icky power battle between the young ladies and the older couple. It's a wierd dynamic that performs out over the course of a few scenes and pits longing in opposition to envy and destruction.

X is an absolute blast to look at, from the way that it makes the most of its seamy setting to the way that it reverses a number of the conventions that surrounded slashers back in the day. It's an excellent little fright flick that's sure to please horror fans and is also an interesting take a glance at how we used to view ladies in the motion pictures..
